Ye un metal blando, muit lichero, resistent l'ataque de l'acido nitrico y fluorhidrico, de color archent, en exposar-lo a l'aire pierde o brillo adoptando una color licherament rosata. O suyo estato d'oxidación mas común ye +3 y as suyas sals son incoloras. As suyas propiedatz son mas parellanas a las d'o itrio y a os lantanidos que a las d'o titanio por lo que gosa incluyir-se a sobén entre as tierras raras.
